Dear Dr. Hood,
I am thrilled to be a part of the Fall 2024 MS in Professional Writing cohort. Both my past educational experiences and my professional experiences have taught me that this program is exactly where I belong to further my career.
This May I officially graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. My program at ASU was an asynchronous learning environment. In the beginning it was a learning curve, but I adjusted quickly and now some of my greatest strengths are time management and self discipline. Because I was able to hone in on these strengths I graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors. Though I was initially unsure if I wanted to pursue a master’s degree, after looking for online master’s programs I stumbled upon the MSPW program. This program seems like the perfect fit for me in terms of my own personal growth as well as where I intend to take my writing career next.
During my time at ASU I was lucky enough to be a Writing Mentor. In this position I collaborated with faculty and students, provided individualized writing workshops, and graded and provided feedback on a range of assignments. It was a challenge for me to help students edit their work without interjecting my voice too much. I struggled to find the balance between taking over and letting them have their own writing style. With time, I was able to find the right balance. Earlier in my college career I was fortunate to be a writing intern for the online magazine H3R. In this role I conducted comprehensive research, and assisted in the creation and development of my four published articles.
In my writing career, my goal is to be a well-rounded, interdisciplinary, research article writer for a magazine or news source. This goal directly aligns to this course because I will learn how to write in a company's voice rather than my own. In my past professional writing experiences, the magazine's voice was very similar to my own. I believe that this course will help me in being more well rounded and therefore more eligible to work for more companies.
